Hamsey Green. For a first time visitor it is surprising how quickly the concrete jungle of Croydon disappears, replaced by an abundance of rolling countryside.

Croydon turns seriously rural on its southern boarder with Surrey. Hamsey Green is a tiny but popular village in Croydon sandwiched between two rural expanses: Riddlesdown Common and Kingswood, great for ramblers, dog walkers and those city slickers who enjoy a country challenge at weekends.

Village residents benefit from a close community whilst having the hustle and bustle of central Croydon a short drive (approx 15mins) away. In addition to its favorable location, Hamsey Green is well- serviced by a charming parade of shops but which can, at times, be inundated by local school children. The vast majority of Hamsey Green shops, bus stops, pubs and public parking can be found along the Limpsfield Road. This road leads to the neighbouring areas: Warlingham and Sanderstead. The area is well served by bus routes, mainly heading to and from Croydon town center. Another main artery forming Hamsey Green is Tithe Pit Shaw Lane, and where these two roads meet is considered by many to be the center of the village, with most of the shops and a large Pub named the Good Companions there. Shops include a large co-op, an Aldays, a post Office, a fancy dress shop and a few restaurants. Tithe Pit Shaw Lane leads to Hamsey Green Infant School, Hamsey Green Junior School and a large secondary: Warlingham School. Leaving Hamsey Green via Tithe Pit Shaw Lane takes you down to neighbouring village Whyteleafe, here you will find the nearest train station serving Hamsey Green: Upper Warlingham, which is about 1 mile away from the Good Companions Pub.

Hamsey Green public transport may not appeal to everyone but it depends on your life style and what you want. The distance to the train station (1 mile) may put some commuters off of living in Hamsey Green, but if you crave a village lifestyle and don’t mind a short drive or long walk to the station…the good news is: Upper Warlingham is within zone 6 and you can be in central London within just 33 minuets. For those not concerned with commuting into the city, the local bus routes are generally pretty good. Arriva run the 403 bus service which means that Hamsey Green is readily accessed from all stops along the route. These are: Warlingham Sainsbury’s, Warlingham Green, Sanderstead Church, Sanderstead Hill, Sanderstead Road, Mayfield Road, Carlton Road, Selsdon Road, Sussex Road, Bartlett Road, Brighton Road – South Croydon, South End, Aberdeen Road, Park Lane, Wellesley Road, St Michael’s Road, West Croydon Bus Station and Tramlink. So as you can see, most places you would want to get to within Croydon are just a single bus journey away. As for getting around in general, Hamsey Green is actually very well-placed within a 20 minuet drive you can access Caterham, Woldingham, Farleigh, Whyteleafe, Kenley, Riddlesdown and Purley. So there is a great deal of variety on your door-step.

Hamsey Green has a detailed history, primarily due to the evidence found around the Hamsey Green Pond. There is evidence that it has been there since Neolithic times and that, due to its positioning, it was a watering hole for cattle. Hamsey Green used to be a farming area: Hamsey Green farm was located to the west of where the modern-day Limpsfield road is. On the other side of the road there is evidence that there was a wheelwright. The importance and significance of Hamsey Green throughout the 1800’s onwards is evidenced by the constant disputed as to its Boundaries. Even as recently as the 1960’s the village was considered to be part of Surrey, and Tandridge district council restored the pond. However by the 1990’s Croydon Council reclaimed control of the village and pond.
